CCS Best Practice Review - NTC Reshaping Trailer Safety

At Hinkley Point C Bylor recently trialled a new prototype safety system used for unloading trailers. The trailer provides a safe and clear access point for plant to unload the trailer, and also provides a walkway with handrails for Steel fixers to manually access a load. The trailer ensures that Steel fixers do not need to climb in, around and over the load of steel, which poses safety hazards especially in wet conditions.

The gridded walkway (yellow) around the trailer is folded up and held in place by the handrails (white). This allows the trailer to transport the load to site as it normally would, without adding extra width to the load.

The gridded walkway and hand rails can easily and safely fold down to the side of the trailer when it is parked, to allow large plant clear access to the load as pictured attached.

In addition, a walkway with handrails can be adjusted into place to allow people clear access around the load, with fall prevention also in place. Steelfixers would normally climb through and over the load to access steel right at the back of the trailer. The trial was a success and well received by Bylor Steelfixers on site, who could clearly see the value and safety benefits of this system.
